Why is "colonel" pronounced "kernel" and "potica" pronounced "pateetsa"

I've never pronounces "colonel" as "Kernel", so I couldn't help you to much.

Colonel is from the obsolete French word coronel.

I have no idea bout potica. What language is it?

I suppose it has something to do with the spanish pronunciation, CORONEL, although the original word comes from italian collonelo.
