I used to play an SG and a Les Paul (I only play the les paul now and I play an ESP guitar). Both are very good, it really depends what sound you like. Both are great for rock.

What I liked about the Les Paul is that it has a nice thick sound because of the thickness of the body and the wood material used. They are made with Mahogany or Maple or both. If you are more of a bluesy player, I'd do with the les paul, it has more bass to it. What I didn't like about the les paul is that its hard to access notes past the 15th fret because of the body shape (single cutaway. And, its a pretty heavy guitar, so if you are a pretty mobile guy onstage, you better get used to it or workout. hahaha.

I liked the SG a little more. What's good about it is that its got a thin body, and its a double cutaway, so you can access the lower frets with ease! Although its a thin frame, the mahogany body makes up for it and still gives you a good deep tone, although not as deep as an LP. As also with the LP, pickups do make a difference. If you want a thicker tone in an SG, you'll need to get a pickup with a better bottom end. The only con with the SG in my experience is that the neck is heavy. It'll give your wrist a workout, but you'll get used to it. Also, when you let go of the neck, it'll drop, which means its not balanced; the neck carries the weight. So if you like to let go of the neck in between songs, get used to having the guitar drooped down.

Hope this helps.

To play rock get a Les Paul. It's got great sustain and can be "banged around on" if you wanna thrash a bit. For a bluesy sound consider the Fender line. The less sustain allows open chording better and you can run lead lines without the worry of that third note back just hanging out there. If you will be using an amp over 25 watts or so make sure at least the bridge pick-up is a humbucker. I can say this for sure because noise levels increase with volume at a seeming exponential rate! If you want distortion use a pedal (I use a Big Muff Pi *with * sustain, I can just dial it up with a knob. Works great and is very solid. I stomp the thing at the last second all the time, pretty hard and it still works great) If budget allows try the seperate head / speaker box arrangment for your amp. This allows you to swap out the heads for a complete different sound without having to allways spring for just the box with speakers. Remember what the pro's say: "play what YOU play, the guitar should fit you not the other way around."

It all depends on the sound that you want. Personally, I've owned a Les Paul custom limited, and I really loved the warm tone. The other guitarist in the band that I played in many moons ago had an SG. It was nice, but he preferred his fender strat over it. The SG was almost whiny and thin.

I moved on to a paul reed smith singlecut. It reminds me of my les paul but it has much better action and is more crisp, still keeping the fat, warm tone. It really is unbelievable.

I play guitar hero a couple years before I pick up the guitar the only thing that helped me with was by coordinations with my fingers and to build some muscle in my hand and that's about it

I always advise people to buy by their playing standards. I dont know how experienced you are, but i do have a Gibson USA Les Paul Standard for sale :).

I personally favour Paul Reed Smith Guitars. (if you didn't guess by my user name)

it depends whats your budget/exerience, if you have a small budget and little experience get a strat. if you are a rich full fledged rock star like me get a LP. I personally dont like the LP body so i just got the SG but thats just my opinion.
