As a big fan of both, this was a really hard question. When Start Wars first came out (yes, I am old enough to remember it), it was the biggest thing going. For teenagers, nothing could touch it and if you hadn't seen Star Wars, you just were not cool. (Or else you hated it and thought anyone who would watch it 17 times was stupid.)
Harry Potter, on the other hand has something more to it... something,... dare I say it? ... magical... about its universal appeal. I was introduced to Harry Potter by my youngest child who actually asked me to buy him the book (Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone) which in itself is was major miracle. The stories have grown up as the characters age, a phenomenal accomplishment in storytelling.
The deciding factor for me has been that the story line in Harry Potter is not predictable. In Star Wars, none of the 'good guy' main characters will die... and we know it all along. With Harry Potter, we don't have that assurance, which keeps us on the edge of our seats. So for me... Harry Potter.

Harry Potter (the books and the movies are way better than Star Wars)
Star Wars seems very dumb to me for some reason
