Excellent question!! Nowadays, a question like this is great thought provoker. Has television become a necessity like the telephone? I say, to a degree society has made it a passive necessity. Although It's not actually a "NEED" as food & clothing & shelter, as a way that people commute important information. The radio, while still very versitile in the coomunications function is almost in second place as technology has advanced so much where it is nearly as easy to send a visual message with a audio mesage to your car. I think people depend on television too much, that has made it a neccesity, and it is growng more each day.

It is a needed luxury!!
We thought we needed it, but we have not had tv in over a month now. There are too many expenses right now for us, and the other bills take priority. Not to mention that prices for cable or satellite have gotten so outrageous. We have discovered without tv we actually spend more time with each other as a family. When we need to know the news or weather or something like that we just look it up online.

It is a luxury. People survived without it before it came out. They found other means of entertainment and they listen to the radio to hear the news, etc. If it was a necessity, what would happen if there is a black out for a long period of time? People would find other ways to entertain themselves and people would find other ways of finding out what is going on, but no one will die from not having one. There are very poor families now in many countries who can not afford a tv, not even food or medication.

Oh, for sure it's a luxury! There's other forms of entertainment instead of TV, such as playing games with kids, or going out with friends, or gardening, or crafts... anything you love to do! As for news, you can get that from neighbours, or the newspaper, or even the radio! I mean, we've only been with TV for the past 50-60 years. What did people do before that? They communicated with others! Their parents, friends, and neighbours! People today don't do that anymore. Communication is becoming a lost art. I don't have cable, and people are usually flabbergasted at that! They usually ask me, "Don't you get bored?" I laugh and tell them of course not. I have other things that are more important to me than television. I can certainly live without one, that's for sure.

Necessity by nature, means something you will die without. Usually, bare necessities are air, food, water, and shelter. Beyond those anything else is just to increase a human's comfort. When looking at it that way, television is way up the list on the luxury side. TV helps one be informed, or be entertained, but it is not a necessity. One won't die without it, even if they threaten or think they will.

If you can live without it, it's a luxury. People lived just fine before there was television, so it's a luxury. I feel sorry for people who feel that it's a necessity. There are so many better things to do with your life.

I think it's both. I think it's a necessity because of the turmoil the world is in today. Can you imagine finding out about the world trade center on 9/12, or hearing about the tightened security the other day when you got to the airport and had your shampoo, conditioner, after shave, Obsession and champagne taken away?
I also think it's a luxury because people spend huge amounts on tv's while others can barely afford the cheap ones at Wal Mart. A good example: my friend called to tell me they got a new tv at Wal Mart and said it broke them. It cost like 250 dollars. When she came to my house shortly afterward she saw the 3000 dollar tv my hubby got. Made me feel bad because she was really excited about her new tv until she saw our widescreen.

I stopped watching TV over a year ago. The positive changes has been enormous. For one, my eye sight got stronger, I have the time to do everything right, without cutting corners. It has made me more patient, more thoughtful....I could go on.
TV today is a necessity in people's lives, they can no longer live without it. But once you sever the bond between the square-eyed monster and your lifestyle, you're in a win-win situation.
I would like to ask all those people who say TV is a luxury to give it up for one month - bet they can't

I believe now that internet is so rampant, TV becomes a luxury, i wouldn't like to say that its a necessity though i know to some people especially for couch potatoes, they wouldn't have anything better to do once the TV is taken away from them. For them its a necessity. Personally i wouldn't want tv to be a necessity for me and in fact i wouldn't want it to be placed in the living room, as it shouldn't be the centre of attention when we see thekind of films and movies that are being aired these days. Hence I would like to say that tv is a luxury, not a necessity.
