You can buy balls/mats of barley straw which stop algea from growing. Most large pet/pond supply stores sell them

I had the same problem until I made a bio-filter.

It circulates the water using a submursable pump. through a 40 gal plastic garbage can partially filled with a porous medium. (i used lava rock, it was cheap) the pump pushes the water into the bottom of the container through a hole I made using hose fittings for the connection, the water flows up through the medium and then out the top of the container through a hole with a pool cleaner flexible hose back into the pond. This also helps reduce ammonia levels and filters other small particles.

My pond is a little smaller than yours 12x10x3. About 50 gold fish
and alot of varios bog plants, Lillies and oxygenating plants. After 5 years I believe no pond is complete with out a bio-filter, it has by far been the most effective way of maintaining clear water and a healthy environment. You can make it for about 50 bucks plus the cost of a pump.

----Good Luck----

You have an algae problem...for the size of your pond, you'll need a number of spreading plants to shade the surface of the water and encourage the fish to breed. Also, you didn't mention any filters or circulators (waterfalls or fountains)...this could help the pond from becoming stagnant. This is especially worrisome, as this is also an excellent breeding ground for mosquito larvae!

With animal life, chemicals may be deadly. Without chemicals, only manual cleaning will suffice. Bleach can be used for cleaning, but keep the animals away, then rinse thoroughly with clear water. The gold fish would have to be removed and placed in a tub of some sort.

Bleach and/or chlorine will prevent it, but can't be used with animals.

I don't know if Algae eaters can survive in that environment, but check with a fish store. That may work, but would take many in that size pool.

The only way to solve algae problems is with plants. Algae will come back every year. Algae is in your pond because there is no plants using up the nutrients. Pond lillies and water and bog plants will solve your problem. Chemicals and other artificial means are just a bandaid on the problem - if they work at all.

Empty about half the water and refill.

Add some algae killer

Put some pond plants for added shade during the sunny hours.

They have special stuff you can put in it. Go to a pet store and they will have it and know which is safe for the fish and turtles. Also you may need to change your filter.

It's called alge and you might want to try alge eaters and ask your local pet place for some sort of filter.
