It's hard to get a true black. Include some navy blue when you dye it. Rit dye would be OK, but you could also try a procion dye, which works well on natural fibers.
Be sure to wash the suit first to remove any dirt or sizing. Use the hottest water you can.
If you dye it in a machine, be sure to run a wash cycle with bleach right afterwards; it'll stain the machine.

Take it to either a dry cleaners, or a seamstress. If you aren't used to doing things like this yourself, you stand a chance of ruining the material. Just because you are going black, you could still end up with a disaster that you can't wear again. The suit, even though it's cotton, probably has chemicals in the dye and fabric. They can be resistent to dyes.

If you go to Walmart or other store you will find dye in liquid form or dry. I think either work as well. You can dye your clothing in the washing machine but if you do this be SURE to run the washer with just water in it for a couple of times to rinse the washer well. You could even add a little bleach. This is to clean the dye out of the washing machine. If you don't clean the washing machine after you have used it to dye something everything you wash after this will also be dyed black. This is IMPORTANT to do. Also, remember the article of clothing you have dyed must be washed separately from now on. If you forget and wash it with other clothes everything will be black! It may be easier to use a laundry tub instead of the washing machine.

depending on the fabric, that will limit how you can dye it. if it's cotton or a natural fiber you can use rit dye to color it. Follow the directions on the box very carefully or you will have a big mess!! You can find rit at most bigger grocery stores in the fabric detergent isle or at Wal-mart. I think you may even be able to use it on some other fibers but you will need to test it first. try the Rit website for more info. Good Luck!! http://www.ritdye.com/craft_faq.asp
