I normally wear contacts, but recently changed to glasses (NOT due to allergies). My glasses need to be updated, they are an old perscription. A few days after wearing my glasses, my eyes started drying our really bad. Again, this is not due to allergies, but could the dryness be due to my eyes straining to see?

Dryness never occurs due to glasses. Dryness can be various causes. Infact contact lenses can precipitate dryness. It can get worse by very cold or hot weather and associated eye/general conditions. There are some drugs when used can cause dryness as a side effect.

Dryness can be more symptomatic if spent more time reading or at computer, because these activities reduce the blinking rate and increase the exposure to air leading to more dryness.

You need first consultation with an eyedoc and may need some tear supplements.

Dryness is usually caused by not blinking enough. Plus if you work on a computer they give off heat which accellerates the proccess. Strain can also come from computers. I was taught in colledge the 10/10 rule. You should look away from your computer for 10 seconds every 10 minutes. and focus on something far away as possible. This keeps the muscle in your eyes from getting used to one level of focusing.

I tend to agree with a couple of the answers already given. As you yourself stated the glasses prescription is an old one and you shouldn't be using them. You are not blinking as often so you are not lubricating your eyes as much. You can buy artificial tears at the supermarket or pharmacy without a prescription. You should be aware that a dry eye is vulnerable to infection. One function of tears is to kill those bacteria present in small numbers on the surface of the eye. Blinking spreads tears evenly over the surface of the eye --- we literally wash our eyes everytime we blink.

Another adverse effect of wearing "old" glasses is that your vision could change yet again making your contacts obsolete.

yes, and when your straining your eyes your not blinking as much. When your eyes become dry they naturally try to blink to make them not dry. But you really don't need to strain your eyes, it is bad for your eye sight too.

I don't think so, but I suppose it is possible to strain to keep your eyes open so much that you don't blink like you need to to keep your eyes moist.
