Smoking is WAY bad for everyone. Each puff causes blood vessels to constrict, so blood flow is impaired. As a result things heal more slowly, pain relief is impaired, optimal results from chemo is impaired, and it has detrimental effects on the heart, lungs, any organ requiring blood to operate. In short, smoking affects EVERYTHING in the body adversely. Sounds like she has already given up or has a death wish - even if death is inevitable, why make the process worse. I would encourage her to check into treatment for depression.

Not all 49 year old women do that when they have cancer, but some do. I guess they think that their going to die any way why not do something that they have never done before. Or why not speed along the process, so that they do not have to go through all of the suffering. It all depends on the person, and their character. If they want to fight they will live if they don't then there's nothing you can do to change that.

It could be for many reasons. Personally, I think it's a form of denial or the feeling that I'm going to die from it so I can do anything I want even if it kills me.
I also believe it's part of the process of acceptance for having cancer before she deals with it.
