reading the local newspaper newcastle united have shown an interest in signing the 21 year old Obafemi Martins but reports from Nigeria suggest he is at least 6 years older do you know the truth ?

Obafemi Akinwunmi Martins (born October 28, 1984 in Lagos, Nigeria) is a Nigerian international football player who is a striker for Internazionale, wearing the number 30 jersey. Regarded by many as one of Inter's finest recruitments in years, Martins has established himself in one of the world's elite strikeforces, along with his teammate, Brazilian Adriano.
Martins is well known for his surging runs, using his blistering speed and pace to run past defenders like they are standing still. He used to run 100 meters in less than 11 seconds.
In 2005, he was alleged to have lied about his age and reports in the papers claim that the age on his passports was different from his real age. However reports turned out to be false. The Nigerian Footbal Association (NFA) further quashed the claims
In December 2005, he signed a long-term contract (until 2010) with Inter Milan worth about 2.5 million euros annually.
In 2006, Martins continued his great form for Inter, before heading out to play for Nigeria in the African Nations Cup, where Nigeria finished 3rd, losing to Ivory Coast 1-0 in the Semi finals. Martins managed two goals in the competition, both coming against Senegal in the first round.
In August 2006, he handed Inter a transfer request after Inter bought in another striker, Hernan Crespo. He is rumoured to be wanted by Valencia, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Manchester Utd and Chelsea. He is valued by Inter at around 17 million Euros. In the Newcastle local newspaper the 'evening chronicle' on August 9th 2006, journalist and chief sports writer of the chronicle, Alan Oliver claimes that united were hoping to start talks with internazionale over a proposed move to the north east club. The move was then said to be in doubt after the strikers age again came into question, United boss Glenn Roeder is reported to be wary of the fact the Nigerian maybe 27 or 28 years old, although this rumour has been disregarded by Nigerian sources.

In Africa anything is possible and many kids are registered late so he could be a little older than what he says maybe 2-3 years but if he was older than that he would have been exposed.

He probably is older than the papers say. It been known that some african players lie about their age. We'll probably never know.
