It is a natural property of the human mind to draw connections between things. It is also a natural property of the human mind that the exceptional stands out far more than the commonplace. These can be useful traits - if you inadvertently do something that makes a tiger chase you, it's probably a really good idea to figure that out and not do it again!

But some of the fallout of that is that if your car dies on the same day as your uncle, you may think the two events are related. And who is to say that they're not? All we can say for sure is that some of the links that seem to form from intuition and odd connections in our mind have no substantial evidence to support them.

But lack of proof positive is a far cry from proof that something is not so.

So are people who believe in gods ignorant? Perhaps. But this trait is hardly restricted to religious persons - many scientists have clung to pet theories long after they were disproven too! And keep in mind that although there are some theologies that have been pretty handily disproven, there are some too which have not.

Are people who believe in gods innocent? Many of them are... in my own experiences with religion, I've found that even people raised in a religion often have to be 'converted' into believers. Many of the people who attend ceremonies and mouth words have no belief whatsoever! Instead they are getting something else out of participation, and I say that okay too.

That's my view of the situation, anyway. Hope that helps!

The human being is a selfish, self-justifying specimen. God is just an avenue we came up with to validate our goodness or whatever we pretend to have, for example goodness.
