The best thing to do is to play tug-of-war with a bedsheet. The pulling causes you to bear down correctly and can help to ease the pain/tension.

The most effective way to push your baby out is to push like you are having a bowel movement. Even though you feel like screaming or doing a lot of grunting, it really doesnt help and it just drains your energy. I learned this the hard way with my first. My 2nd and 3rd were much easier

You pull your legs up, you put your chin down to your chest, and you take a big breath in and hold it while you bear down (like having a really big bowel movement) for the length of time it takes somebody else in the room to count to ten. Try not to scream, or moan, or talk, or yell because that takes your energy away from pushing.
