My little boy has been very crabby since birth, very whiny and never slept well - for an entire year! The Dr said he was normal and just fussy. He recently had strep throat and after taking the antibiotic for three days, the strep throat cleared up and he's been a very happy baby since. It was an immediate change, not gradual. He used to whine and "grumble" all day long. Now no whining unless he's hungry or tired (like a normal baby), and he now naps well and sleeps through the night. He even crawls up on my lap when he's tired. Before the antibiotic he would wake up 2-3 times during naps or sleep about a half hour a day, then would wake up 4-5 times at night, sometimes more. Also he would kick, pinch and bite when getting him to sleep. He now plays with toys, entertains himself, laughs and is a joy. All our friends and family have commented so it's an extremely noticeable change. Could the antibiotic have cleared up something he's had for an entire year, or does that seem far fetched?

it can happen, your baby could have something for a year. it has happenned to my daughter. she kept pulling on her ears and i took her to the doctor like every week. they kept saying i am a overprotective mother and she is fine. so i took the chance and took her to a different doctor and they detected it right away. so i have no clue how her doctor couldn't see it. but the other doctor did . she had a severe middle ear infection. so, yes things like that happen.

It seems a little far fetched to me. My first guess was that he had amoxicillin (the pink stuff). I used to get in a good mood after I took that as a kid, too. Have you ever tasted it? Bubble gum. That stuff rocks! LOL Seriously...

I don't know about temperament, but I know when my older son was an infant, he was very colicky. Everyone kept telling us that most babies grow out of it at about 3 months. I'll have you know that at three months EXACTLY he was a completely different baby...no more "witching hour" screaming fits, no more crying and thrashing, no more straining to pass gas, no more fighting sleep, etc. He really was a totally different child. I've noticed with him (and his younger brother) they go through phases. From out of the blue, my 2.5 year old will be a royal pain in the butt...EVERYTHING is "NO MOMMY!" and then it'll be instant tears, and lying down kicking and screaming. (Terrible twos...gotta love 'em!) At any rate, one day, no warning, he just stopped...He actually came to the table and ate his dinner (ALL of it) with the family, whereas before you couldn't even call his name to see if he wanted to come to dinner because it would set him off.

Maybe it was this way for your son? Maybe he was working on his molars unbeknownst to you, and they just happened to break through the skin right as he was finishing his antibiotics?

Has he started walking recently? I know with both of my boys (my younger one, especially) they were always SO whiny during that learning to crawl--learning to walk stage. They'd get so frustrated, and then FINALLY when they actually became mobile, they were totally different children (again!).

having something for a year and the doctor not see it is a little far fetched. However, if the baby is now happy, why wouldn't you think that something had been wrong for a year?
he might have had the strep for that long - just no symptoms. I'm cranky when I dont feel good!

Make sure your boy finishes the course of antibiotics.

I think you'll never learn *for sure* why he's happier, but it could be as a result of him having turned over a new leaf, and the antibiotic helped get rid of an infection and he (simply) is happy about it.

It's unlikely that he's been suffering with an ailment since birth that has now vanished.

Maybe, the anitbiotic triggered his immune system to produce more white cells and now he's fighting fit!!!

Nevertheless, it must be wonderful for you to enjoy this new freedom!!! Good on you (and him!!!)

It does seem far fetched.

It could be that the baby was growing out of his previous grumpiness as the infection was setting in. Thus the infection could have taken over as the main cause.

On the other hand, your baby might have been lying to start with!!!! Perhaps once bub had something real to complain about he decided he should probably only cry when there is actually something wrong!!!

That is great news though.

I've never heard of it, but that doesn't mean it's not possible. It could be that he started out fussy, then continued when he got sick. The antibiotic may have made him feel so much better that he's turned into the new and improved happy baby!

Regardless of the reason, just enjoy your little boy and his new-found love of life!

The medicine probably has something in it that boosted his "happy stuff" so-to-say. Some things like caffeine will do that too.
