I’m living in India – it’s almost six years now that I’ve left Europe for good – and I’m used to a life on bare soles: I haven’t worn shoes since December 2000 (with a few exceptions!) and I don’t think I’ll EVER imprison my feet again! I'm always barefoot: All-year-round, wherever I go, whatever I do. Most of my friends have never seen me wearing shoes… WHY? That’s a question I’ve heard a thousand times. Well, it’s not a kind of “fashion statement”… Walking barefoot is AMAZING!!! If you’re barefoot you’re able to FEEL the ground! Would you wear gloves all-year-round? Nopes! So: Why shoes? Being in touch with Mother Earth, letting the energy flow freely isn’t that bad, after all… Right? Plus: It’s very refreshing and stimulating (ever heard about the reflex zones in our feet?)! Join me for a rather longish hike, preferably in the mountains, and let’s see who gets tired first! Walking barefoot is stimulating: In every sense! There’s more: The ecological impact is far less dramatic (erosion!) if you’re hiking in a natural environment (ever thought about what your heavy hiking boots do to the ecosystem?). It’s also communicative to a degree you wouldn’t expect: Travelling a lot I’ve made more than one friend explaining WHY I’m roaming around barefoot! Somehow you’re more defensive, less aggressive if barefoot… There are many aspects, but what really counts is the sensual factor: The “barefoot feeling”! It’s not only about feeling the ground beneath our soles, every change in texture or temperature, the difference between lawn and concrete, tar and marble, but also about feeling free – in many ways! If you don’t know what I mean: Leave your shoes at home and experience the freedom, the freshness, the air touching every inch of your feet… Try it once and you’ll never want to wear those “little prisons” again!

Personal choice, I guess.

People that wear shoes don't know what they are missing.

Shoes = hot sweaty feet, athletes foot, blisters

Barefoot = healthy strong feet, tough skin, full sensation when walking, enjoyment of various textures and temperatures, the feeling of softness or hardness of the walking surface. Barefooters tend to be more relaxed and focused on their own well-being rather than stressed out and anxious and worried.

Who cares what the shod people think? I certainly don't. I go barefoot everywhere and enjoy every minute of it.

The only thing I don't like is being asked to leave places that "require" shoes yet they allow anyone wearing stupid flip-flops that do nothing to protect the feet from anything.

I have some shoes, but I leave them at home. I don't even take shoes with me when I travel. Barefoot is the way to be.

I go barefoot most of the time at home, I often go barefoot to the local shops and although sometimes ai get a few funny looks no one has ever said anything. i feel much more comfortable in barefeet than in shoes. and I have never had any injury going barefoot, you just have to keep a bit of an eye on the ground. I fine my feet are much healthier this way, they rarely smell not loke being cramped in hot shoes all day. I accept that sometimes my soles do get dirty. but I dont accept the argument that this is unhygenic. if i walk around a shop barefoot my feet are no more dirty than the soles of peoples shoes. plus I wash my feet at least once a day in the bath. who ever washes the soles of their shoes?
Go on give it a go, I am sure you will enjoy it, don't worry what people think, they are probably jealous they havn't got the guts to do it.
Please let us know how you get on and what you think.

I go barefoot all the time. I live in the country and walk on the gravel road and it doesn't bother me. When my son first started walking i had him walking barefoot too. People in the neighborhood joke that if i have shoes on i am going to town. It is great to have the freedom to choose shoes or not. Yes, the feet get dirty but that is why we have water. I have had shoes on and had a nail go through the shoe into my foot, so the shoes don't really portect our feet. I say go barefoot if u want and ignore those who can't enjoy it. My feet are tired when i have had shoes on all day compared to a day of being barefoot

It's not hygenic...and there are hazards...you may have eyes, but how many people would be quick to sue a restaurant or store, because they stepped on a piece of glass that didn't get swept up? Know what I mean? Not everyone uses their eyes or their brain.

There's a liability issue as well...I go barefoot all the time, where it's appropriate...

I used to run around barefoot all the time to neighbors houses when I was young, but these days just about all stores and restaurants require shoes. Also, there's so much crap on the ground I would hate to hurt my precious feet.

not exactly hygienic, and dangerous from certain items discarded with no regard.. but there was a time it wasn't an option in as much no one had any money to buy footwear and those that were lucky enough to have uppers didn't have the soles and if they did there would be a hole which had to covered with cardboard, where was this? Britain! after wwi, the men back from action were destitute, skint, disillusioned, and hungry as were his family. whats the deal you ask, please yourself, but i would stick to shoes, anyway right now its too bloody cold to go out barefooted but i wouldn't regard you loony its nice to please yourself what you wish to do, (go on then)<<<<<<<<

It's the no shirt, no shoes, no service signs. We are a sue happy nation. If you get hurt because you weren't wearing shoes in a business, they are still liable. And after about 13 it killed my feet to walk bare-foot if I happened to step on a large pebble. My kids would go everywhere bare footed if I let them. As for needles, not as likely I grant you, but just as easily go through your shoe.

Have you seen how people gob on the streets, it doesn't matter that you can see it, what about when it dries up, it's still there along with the dried reminants of dog poo. I know what you mean though in some ways life has got too complex, no designer names when we were younger (very few anyway), i have a friend that goes around with no shoes because shes got a skin complaint.

I'd say that it starts when we're kids; our parents say, "Put your shoes on before you go out," and we do. We've done it so often in the past, it just becomes automatic. Like you said, there's dog poo and needles, but there's also broken glass, even in water. I think that was my parents' main concern.

Stores just don't want to be sued. I think you CAN go barefoot into a store; they just want to cover their *sses. The signs are a disclaimer.
