I am not looking for a dictionary copy-paste answer here. What I am look for is *your* definition of the word "art" and what type of work do you consider as art.

Is it necessary to put effort to create "art'? Is fractal imaging art?

How is a designer different from an artist?

Nice broad question!

An artist is a blend of skills and talent.

80% of an artists work is really just craftsmanship.

The spark for art is the battle between technique and expression.

Being heavily involved in the process, one must always remember that there is a final product.

Most art is never finished, the artist just ran out of time and you see where they left off.

A designer is mostly a craftsman creating work for another's vision -- on occasion, it can become a collaboration and the work is greater than one persons effort.

The making of the art piece is the satisfaction; self-discovery, coming from an honest place, expression and even commentary are all explored over and over again.

A well-grounded artist can see honesty in other's work and therefore earn one's respect.

And there is "art-speak" as well, fellow artists say things like "it is what it is" and "it's too raw and lacks sophistication" and "that guitar chord needs some grease on it".

:-)

Art is the visual or audible creative interpretation of emotion or objects.
To me.

Yes, a fractal image is Artistic, but I don't know if I'd call it "art."

The problem is the word itself is both a verb as well as a noun.
The act of creating is art, the product can be art.

Being that I am an artist, or artisan as some might say. My work is my passion, it's something I cannot live without doing.
I see art in many things. Yes, a designer can indeed be an artist.
Many "One of a kind" disigns are truly works of art.

Many say you can't define art. I beg to differ. I have a definition that so far has held concensus. I order for something to be considered a work of art, it should meet all of three criteria:
1) It should be original in it's concept, design or configuration
2) It should require a rare or unique talent to produce
3) It should capture the attention of and hold some sort of appreciation for the average person.

If it doesn't meet all three, it's not art. Doesn't mean it isn't something good. Could be great decoration, or social expression, or entertainment, but Not art.

Anyone disagree? Test this theory, give me examples and I'll show how it does/doesn't meet the criteria.

Art is a free expression of individual creativity. Art is diversity which comes in numerous forms.

The difference between a designer and artist is a designer is taught and uses art to enhance projects. While both can be free to express their creativity, designers are more geared to be instructed as to what another person is looking for.

I think art is anything that expresses your emotions.

I don't think effort is required all of the time. I do think fractal images could be art because they're pretty and can convey a mood.

A designer wants to make something that will please others.
An artist wants to make something that will please them self.

I am an artist, when i think of art i think of items (or in my case, paintings and drawings) that almost takes an onlooker into your soul, you're showing them your emotions, hopes, and what you believe as reality all at the same time. My art work is my wish, and my fear that it won't come true.

for me art is a passion. it can also be desire. it is a talent you are born with. it is feeling that comes from inside. with art you can express your feeling on a simple piece of paper. Art is part of our life.
