It all depends on your pain tolorence. Some people think, for example, that the lower back is painful...however I didnt think it was at all. There are a few obvious spots that are pretty much painful on everyone...those being: elbows, breast bone, knees, nipples, behind the knee, behind the arm close to the arm pit, directly on the ankle bone...just to name a few.
It all just depends on what things feel like to you specifically.
People also sway in the way of 'if its on a bone, it hurts more'...but thats nto necessarily true either. I have many tattoos, and I didnt think the ones 'on the bone' felt that different.
The pain level with most people will also depend on what design you are getting. If the artist has to go over a spot three or four times with different layers of color, then obviously it will be more sensitive in that area than if it were just one straight color. Make sense?
Good luck, and make sure you get a design that you will like and enjoy forever...they are definately a commitment. :)

You should get a tattoo where you want it most, not where it would hurt the least. To answer your question, however, the more fleshy the part of the body, the less it will hurt. Any area where you have more bone than muscle (or fat) will hurt more.
Just know that no matter where you get it, it's going to hurt (like 100+ wasps or bees stinging you all at once for several minutes-hours). It will also be with you for the rest of your life, so make sure it's a design you can live with for the rest of your life.
Also, tattoos will change as you age: think of placing a tattoo where your skin won't change as much (aka women who later get pregnant will stretch an abdomen tattoo). Try to stay in shape to keep the tattoo looking good, and always protect it with sunscreen to keep the colors from fading or distorting.

Without a doubt, different people feel pain to greater and lesser degrees. It's also true that different parts of the body are more and less sensitive. Areas that are fleshy (upper arm, calf, abdomen) tend to feel pain less than areas close to bone (an ankle, elbow, or the spine, for example). Some people will describe it as a hot scratching sensation while others will feel something more acute. Some people will wince and practice a breathing exercise to control the pain while others chat casually and even seem to doze. It's also remarkable how much of an effect your tattoo artist can make, both physically and mentally, on your experience of pain in the tattoo process.

In a fleshy and fatty part. The most painful spots are close to the bone. But not that much I tell you, depends on your tolerance... I have one in my anklet and it wasnt a painful thing to do (and I was sober!! :P) Wherever you do it, make sure you can easily hide it. You cant imagine how many problems you can have as far as job wise and other things is you have a visible tattoo. Besides, its cool to know that people look at you dressed normally and dont see a thing when in fact you have your hidden beauties!! :D

Anywhere that is a fatty area. The more skin/fat the less it will hurt. I have one on my ankle & top of my foot and those very painful cause its all bone. i also have one on my shoulder blade that didnt hurt that much cause there is some fattyness there. DO NOT get your first one in the middle of your lower back that is the most painful spot. My friend got her first one there and it was pretty big! She was in tears!

I have six tattoos and my least painful two were right above my breast...lots of padding there...=) The two on my ankle and foot hurt a lot since there is not much muscle or fat there. Good luck and have fun...they are addicting!!

I have one tattoo on my ankle. My anticipation of the pain was much higher than the actual pain. It really wasn't bad.

don't get one on your foot!!! i did that and though the tattoo is the size of a nickel, it hurt like hell. i got another one on the back of my left hip - it's the size of my palm - and it didn't hurt a bit. it just tickled. the more tissue you have in an area, the less it will hurt. have fun!
