My copy of Windows is legal, and I just replaced my motherboard so windows is asking for activation again.

yes, theoretically there is only one activation allowed per key, however, if you find it will not activate after reinstalling, call the # from microsoft and they will ask you some questions and then give you a code # to enter that will validate your windows. also, they only do this a maximum of 10 times, and they may ask you for numbers off your certificate to insure that you have a licensed copy

There's no "limit" per se provided you have a valid product key, however, at some point they will require you to call their 800 number to verify your product key. I'm not sure if anyone knows how many installations that is exactly, but ifyou ever reach that point, don't be afraid to call, you just tell him whatever you like and they will always approve it.
