The best book I have read (about half a dozen times) is "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess. If you've seen Kubrick's film, the book is written in that Nadsat language that Alex and his Droogs speak. Despite the often horriffic events which take place, there is a great deal of humour in the book which didn't translate very well to the screen, where it was replaced with the campness of a Carry On film for intellectuals.

Tom Robbins "Another Roadside Attraction" and "Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates". The titles are a bit... goofy, but don't mind them. It's a thrill reading them. And they will broaden your mind....

My favorites are in Science Fiction. Authors like Asimov & Heinlein did some really wonderful stuff. And, belive it or not, science fiction writers influence science. Asimovs' 3 laws of Robitics are being used today, & lots of other stuff.
As long as you are reading something, you will be okay, & smarter than those who don't.
Piers Anthony has a neat collection of sci-fi & sci-fi - fantasy you could get into.
