I have a belkin wireless modem/router and some times if I try to use 2 computers at the same time the one green light goes out and it will disconnect from the net the only thing that gets me back on line is to turn the power off to the modem then turn back on again and the light comes back on then I can then connect.
It does not do it all the time but seems to be when a second computer is also using the wireless connection.
Can it be to do with the setting?

No I don't think it has to do with the settings. For the settings on routers are quite straight forward nowaday, whether it works or never. I have a Belkin wireless router, which called itself "High speed mode, Wireless G router". I confirmed this model has problem as a router though it works pretty ok on bridge or AP mode. Since you are using it for internet connection, it must be in Router mode. I got exactly the SAME PROBLEM with you, the internet connection will drop on its own. NO .. it has nothing to do with how many PC you are connecting to it , by wire or wireless (it supposes to allow multi-user connections, since it is a ROUTER). The connection will unstable when your traffic goes up a bit, yes just a bit... I compare this with other wireless routers I have (I am a system engineer with a network company, so I have this luxury), this give one of the worst internet connection stability and I am already using the lates patch for firmware .

Belkins are know to have problems. Look at your manual and find out how to do updates for your Belkin. If there are patches and fixes for it, it may fix the problem.

Also, when you use the second computer, check for the IP Address and make sure it is not the same as the other. To do this, go into command prompt (dos mode) and type ipconfig, look for the ip address and write it down, do the same for the second pc, if they are the same, you need to change them. I can give you more details, but first check for update (firmware) for your router.

Mine doesn't do that even with four others on network. If yours works at all it probably is not a setup issue because I don't recall settings related to number of computers.

There is probably something else going on at the time of the failure. If it is a 2.4GHz router you could be getting interference on its channel from a cell phone, microwave, or something else on that band. Try switching channels on it, It might also be that while you are using multiple computers at a popular time of the day a neighbor is also using a computer near you on your channel and is interfering. Again a channel switching would help.

Belkin has 24/7 helpful service - call them and they will stay on the line till the problem is solved,

Try powercycling your modem.

1) Unplug the power to your modem, then to your router
2) Shut down your computer completely
3) Wait about a minute or two
4) Plug in your modem and wait for the blinking lights to turn solid
5) Plug in your router
6) Turn on your computer

if there is a configuration setting that allows your modem to be used as a hub/switch, make sure that is enabled.

Try updating it with the latest firmware and see if the problem goes away.
