Living in Ghana for 8 yrs and the states for 10.........i can definately tell you that Kwanzaa is not an African holiday in anyway.........i hear people say that it comes from Africa and i get extremely mad.....if African Americans are going to create a holiday and celebrate it they must know where it comes from.......I feel its very rude to ignore christmas and celebrate something else someone else has created.........you can celebrate both but dont ignore the religious one...its the same things when most African Americans say they come from South Africa and speak Swahilli ......the fact of the matter is that most slaves came from the West Africa and we dont speak Swahilli over there.~its only my opinion dont kill me

Kwanzaa (or Kwaanza) is a week-long secular holiday honoring African-American heritage, observed from December 26 to January 1 each year, almost exclusively by African-Americans in the United States of America.
Kwanzaa consists of seven days of celebration, featuring activities such as candle-lighting and pouring of libations, and culminating in a feast and gift-giving. It was founded by controversial black nationalist Ron Karenga, and first celebrated from December 26, 1966, to January 1, 1967. Karenga calls Kwanzaa the African American branch of "first fruits" celebrations of classical African cultures.

I do not believe the people who celebrate it can even explain it. It has no significance and does nothing but cause more distance between cultures and people.
I will be watching this forum to see if someone can logically explain what that is.

Yes. The Blacks (or African Americans) of the USA felt a need to further seperate themselves from mainstream america. So they created thier version of Xmas. It's history is only about 15 or 20 years old but they say they can trace it back to slave days. It isn't christian but is celebrated at that time of the year. I guess they don't like the white mans version of Santa or the real reason of Christmas which is the celebration of the birth of Jesus.
