I've never hosted or even attended a Murder Mystery Party, but I would like to host one. They sound like fun.
I'm thinking that a smaller party (6-9 people) would be ideal for me.
Has anyone done this and have any good tips or websites to check out?
How basic or elaborate do these things get?

Hi!
I've only ever hosted one, but I've been to several. They've all been a party in a box. They're in a game box called, "An evening of murder" or "How to host a murder party". Basically it comes with 8 character roles. So you decide which character suits which friend, mail the invitation and character description to them. You would be the host, so you don't have to be a character. They're usually thematic, so a western, or on a boat, or the 60's, etc. The game has tons of ideas, food suggestions, so you can get right into it preparing it, or keep it simple...
Hope this helps!
Good luck and have fun!
