There are cases for old hard drives that have a usb cable. It turns that spare hard drive into a portable hard drive. VERY handy to have around. Pick up one for about $50 and you can access the old drive on any pc, laptop or otherwise.

Hard drives are pretty stable. So long as you don't drop it, they'll keep their data for a while. I found one from 1999 thats been in my desk since then and it still worked when I put it in the external hard drive case.

Put the old hard drive into another desktop as a second drive and copy the music to a CD, jump drive, etc. (Unfortunately, it won't fit in you laptop).

If you do not have access to a second desktop computer, you can purchase a USB hard drive enclosure. It is a box that you put the hard drive into, and then it plus into a USB port on your laptop and you can access the hard drive from your laptop. If you did that, you would be able to continue to use the old hard drive for backups and additional storage with your laptop.
