We live in mid Georgia, so I am sure anything Californian is out of the loop. And to boober_fragg, I do believe you have the right answer, the eastern king snake pic look exactly like the one we found. It was just traveling thru the grass in our front yard. many thanks!

Sounds like some kind of kingsnake depends on where you are If your near the west coast then it might have been a California kingsnake. If you were on the east coast it could have been an eastern kingsnake. Here are some pictures of both. It would be easier to tell you for sure of we knew where you saw the snake. And pictures would be really good. I know for sure it's not venomous. There are no venomous snakes in the United states that look like that.

If it looks like this-- it's just a grass snake or a king snake and nothing to worry about. They are harmless. If not- and if you don't get a real answer- do a web search for pictures of snakes and try to determine if it's poisonous or not.

thats a king snake i have a snake book with all the snakes in it with pictures and it says the names and about them

its most likel;y a king snake non poisonous or if it has a hood its a south mo ratsnake both are not posinous but they can bite they have small tiny teeth and they can inflict pain but not much to fear.. remember red touch yellow kill a fellow red touch black u better jump back...

i think it's a friendly southern boa u should put it back into the bush if u live in the south or go to texas and let it out

which part of the world are you from?? It all depends on where you are from, coz there cud be similar snakes @ different places..
