I'm moving into a place of my own soon, and I feel it would be best to have some method of self defense. I feel I am responsible enough for a gun, and certainly physically strong enough to handle most anything. I do, however, want something on the medium to small scale because I also intend on getting a concealed gun permit. Any suggestions?

Have you fired a handgun before? If not, then go to a local shooting range and spend an hour or two trying out a few.

I would suggest a 9mm. Glock 19 I believe is the compact. I have full size 9mms and .45s so my knowledge of compact guns is limited. You can get a Colt 1911 Commander style size .45 with a 3inch barrel that would give you all the stopping power you need.

And as a few have said already, An S&W J frame revolver to avoid snags if you're gonna CCW.

Consider a .38 revolver with a 4" barrel. The revolver is highly reliable and with +P ammuntion, it has plenty of stopping power. I would suggest a Smith & Wesson J-frame because the hidden hammer won't catch on anything if you have to extract the gun from your clothing, under the bed, etc...

Go to a reputable firearm dealer, get information and do research about the makes and models. You make be able to take a gun safety course before purchasing, same with conceal and carry permits, some will "rent" the firearm for the course. Go to a shooting range, you can rent different guns for target practice and find one you are comfortable with. I like to shoot for fun, don't carry it around with me. Self defense classes are a good addition to round out your ability to protect yourself.

Go to a shop and check out a few different ones and see what you're comfortable handling. I prefer a 9mm or .357 personally.

With all do respect, if you're so certain you are "strong" and "capable" why do you feel the need for a handgun?
