The shift lever rod has either came off from it,,or has slipped out of place,,i don't think you have a serious problem,,it probably has been worked on,,and someone forgot to tighten the rod back up,,if it is one of the ones that has a cable instead of a rod,,it may have broken,,or come loose,,at least when you go to get it repaired they cant tell you that your transmission is out on it,,it probably just has came loose ,,i own a repair shop here in Tennessee and we do this kind of work all the time,,99% of the time it had just came loose,,i hope this helps.good luck with it/

Here's the CORRECT answer. The shift linkage has become disconnected somehow. The "sticky" feeling was the either the shift cable or the linkage itself slipping; now it's come loose. On a 2004 vehicle it will be covered under warranty. Have the car towed into the dealership and they will fix it for you. The tow cost might be covered as well, either by the warranty or you could turn it in to your insurance company if you have towing coverage. But there's nothing you can do otherwise; tow it to the dealer. It's not an overly hard fix.
Hope this helped.

First, be certain you have your foot firmly on the brake pedal. That is a safety feature so the car can't go in gear with no one in the drivers seat.
If that doesn' t cure the problem it needs to have an adjustment on a cable that runs between two other mechanisms. If you can't shift it it will have to be towed in, sorry.
This might still be warranteed, call the dealer and ask.
Good luck

Get it towed into a service station that you trust (one that deals with Transmissions) And get it fixed now or you will be paying more later. You should only take it to the dealer if its a warranty issue, because dealers will charge way too much.

Either there is transmission damage, or the linkage between the shifter and the transmission is broken. Tow it in to the dealer and find out.
You could have driven it in yesterday.
