I read something about private beaches and wondered - can you just walk by in the shallows, or do you have to swim?

As long as your feet is in the water, you're not trespassing. The theory is that bodies of water are owned by the gov't and not the individual property owner under the public trust doctrine. So theoretically you can be in the water waving back to the owner and he can't do a damn thing to you.

I don't really know for sure but I believe that a private beach also refers to the water in front of it also!@

You cannot. It is private. Unless you get the owners permission.

In most states if your in the water (even walking)
you are not tresspassing, because no one can own the ocean.

Stay in front of the mean high tide mark and they can't do a thing about it.
