Actually, it was the opium trade that made Britain such a rich and important power in the 18th and 19th centuries. When the Brits asked the Chinese to trade their tea for something the Brits had, the Chinese could see nothing worth buying, so the Brits went back to Bengal, took opium to China, got some people hooked and demanded tea plants in exchange for the drug. The Brits then took the tea back to India and planted it there.

The drugs barons of Latin America are laundering their money buying up land and buildings to become legitimate. The fact that we turn a blind eye to the trade in Afghanistan and Turkey is because to destroy it would impoverish the people.
