To stop watching trash TV it would just take a bit of discipline on my part but I doubt I would quit watching TV completely the news is a very positive thing to watch ould also ate to miss all the sport that is broadcast on the TV. At work we have TV's on the wall in the canteen so I would probably always have a sneaky peek at the TV even if I had quit it at home.
£1billion would help then I could go to all the premiership footbal matches and rugby league games I wanted to see and I could get my news from the web or the radio so its not such a stupid answer.

I have stopped watching TV for almost 10 years now. What made me give it up? The idea that I could use my time and my brain in better ways. Can you imagine how much even a half an hour can give you in productivity. If I'm tired, I'd rather go to sleep. OK, I still need to work on my discipline, as I tend to do other things instead of hitting the hay right away. But I can at least say that I have the ability to use more of my time wisely. And anyway, the programs really are lame. I'd rather expirience a better life than watch someones pathetic one.

At the moment I find myself watching junk tv that I wouldn't have been interested in in the past.
I think the reason for this is that my working hours have increased and at the end of a hard day at work, it's just easier to stare at the tv than do anything else.
Am a very avid reader and usually read a book a week, but at the moment, even that seems like too much effort.
The UK has a very hard working work ethic and we work very long hours often under a lot of pressure and stress. Therefore, escapism by tv is just a way to wind down.
If we had less stressful jobs, worked less hours and had longer weekend, I would definately watch less tv and read more. Also, having to get to work early in the mornings prevents a great deal of socialising during the week.

Coincidence that you asked this question. Yesterday after wasting another day/evening in front of the tv and aimlessly surfing the net, I decided I would have to take the plugs off all my T.V's. I'm 23 and live alone with my son. I go to college and am behind on coursework, yet I sit in front of the TV doing nothing about it. The T.V breeds laziness and depression in me and is a massive escapism tool. I am actually an intelligent person and cringe at myself when I hear myself actually talking bout a T.V show to someone, I feel like screaming at myself 'get a life' !! I know I wouldn't be bored without a T.V, my 3 year olds development would benefit massively from the absence of T.V and DVD's. So, in answer to your question, it's just taken my initial thought yesterday and your question today for me to give up T.V. This is not a joke, hopefully it's going to be a turning point. I'm going to take the plugs off right now. Thank you so much for your question!!!! (Are you my inner conscience finding ways to get to me?)

I really only watch DVDs at my convenience. It makes me feel bad that some of the TV shows that I like never got my support, but oh well. This way I never have to deal with commercials, I choose when I watch, and its okay if I watch 15 min and then turn it off for later.
We didn't have a TV for 2 years after we got married, I read more. I still read more than most people I know.

Simply because you got tired of it, doesn't mean anyone else is a "mindless little robot...".
What an ugly attitude you have...much like many former smokers...they tend to be so much more "holier than thou" than those who never smoked... *rolls eyes*
I gave up tv for months, because it didn't mean enough to me to pay for cable...I read voraciously during that time, and occasionally watched a VHS or DVD movie...I still don't watch much, but will sometimes have it on at home for 'background noise' when I'm doing other things...sometimes when you live alone, it's just nice to hear other voices...

**** I've already quit watching TV as much as I use to. The quality in the programming is just ridiculous. I agree, one more really stupid over exaggerated reality TV show I'll scream. There's no thought in anything anymore. Unless its a good movie and a TV classic i don't watch it. I watch the news, and i do a ton of reading.... And i encourage my kids to do the same. A lot of foolish things going on on the screen these days and as much as parents complain about what's on there, have any of them tried Turing the damn set off...

what really does stop me watching TV is those moments of Life Appraisal, when I wonder if I ever will play my guitar again, or lose the beer belly, or whatever, BUT only when they come coupled with a small, sustained rise in serotonin for some reason or other. If I get that combination I can ditch TV for weeks or months.
TV is for when I'm down. Rather like alcohol, it helps me stay down. Funny thing, life.

I watch hardly any t.v. I spend all my spare time on my computer(or Yahoo Answers, since I discovered it a few days ago) or reading. Reality t.v. is dreadful and the daytime programmes mostly naff. The weekend is all Sport which I hate, and I live right next door to a London football ground which is a nightmare of drunks, rubbish and noise.

well i will say this i have a tv but i dont have cable or a satelite dish, that is one of the many ways that i help myself to not watch tv. when the phone rings or when my son or when i begin to talk i turn the tv off.
for me to not watch tv i would have to have a more interesting life. a life filled with more than college courses, work and a busy little artist son. a life filled without more activites so that when we come home we just talk about our day eat and go to bed
....thanks for the wonderful question, because i had just recently decided to have a more active life i had put it off for financial reason but i really looked at the benefit of it for me and my son.
