Cut the tops off, but not too close to the bulb, then pack them loosely into the legs of an old pair of tights, then hang up in a shed or garage.

Onions last longer and are fresher when they are exposed to the air. So, store them in a basket and see that they are exposed. You do not have to store them in Fridge, in fact it causes smell.

Tie them together, hang in your shed upside down, they will dry better that way & keep good.
