Chinchilla's stink! But birds are annoying.. That's a tough one...
I would go with what your sister wants (be a good sister to her). =)

COCKATIEL....but ONLY ONLY ONLY!!!! and ONLY if you have lots of time for it.
I know people who had a chinchilla and it was in the cage lots and was let out and finally ran away. And yes, they do smell!
So yeah, Cockatiels sing and yell and love attention. The more you jump, yell, go nuts, sing, act a fool...the more they love you and they love to be with you.
I also got my Cockatiel because I just wanted a pet. Then I got another, cause it needed a buddy you know. They mated and now I have 3 chicks which turned 6 months old today!!! So yep 5 birds. Loud, messy, but I love them and would not give them up for anything.
If you truly love the creature, it being messy, loud and whatnot will not even affect you.
:)

I know how much they cost but they are pretty cute. Just don't make them into a fur coat, it is illegal. But cockatial, I have had one. We found it but we gave it away because we couldn't take it out, it couldn't fly or speak. But chinchillas need not only a resonable size cage but it needs to have a sand box for their sand bathes, a place to sleep( we used another sand box house and filled it with shavings because our chinchillas were sleeping in their sand box), chew toys to keep their teeth down so they don't over grow, food, and a water feeder. Cockatiels need a cage, bird seed specially for that breed of bird, bowl or better yet a water constianer on the side of the cage, perches to rest on, a thing( have no idea what it is called but I know it is white) to grind its beak, and attention if you want it to talk. Also, cockatiels need something to play with as well. And, they BITE hard. But remember, this is your sister's b-day, so get her a chinchila and ask for you a cocktel later or suprise her and get her both. Hoped this helped

I think the cockatiel would be alot more fun for you. Chinchillas don't do much. A cockatiel will talk and can be really funny. Make sure everyone in the house is going to be able to stand some noise.

I would strongly encourage you to get the cockatiel. The main factor in buying a bird like this is to either make sure they are hand-fed from birth, or to buy them as a baby. Try handling the bird a little at the pet store and see if its friendly with you.
I've owned several birds and they really do make very fun and interesting pets.
Good luck with your decision!

Hi Kiddo--- I've owned BOTH animals, and I have to yell ya, that they are BOTH kinda messy to clean up after. Chinchillas, scatter their Chinchilla Dust everywhere when they Bathe, and the bird scatters empty seed hulls everywhare when they eat. I liked my Chinch Winston better I think, becayse after they get used to you handling them, they become really cuddly and fun to play around with. I hope this helps in your decission!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!
