I thought the leak was from the trans pan gasket. I replaced the stock pan w/an alluminum tci trans pan & gasket. When I removed the pan, I found 3 bolt holes stripped out---I fixed this by installing thread inserts in order to keep original bolt size. I made sure the inserts were slightly recessed so pan & gasket could seal properly. After this repair; I filled trans & test drove car. afterwards; I checked & found no leaks. I then let car sit for several hours & every hour upon recheck, I still found no leaks until car had sat for about 4 hours: leak seemed to be from rear of trans pan again. Upon further inspection; found leak seems to be comming from just above the rt rear of trans pan from what looks like a plug of some sort in back of the main housing just below where the tail shaft housing bolts on. The plug (or whatever this is) is about the diameter of a dime. What is this? Has anyone seen this leak before? What can I do to seal this? Please advise.

The item you are referring to is the"stop rod" for the Low/Reverse Band. It is sealed with 2 O-rings. The only way to repair it is to remove the tail section of the transmission, the transmission pan and the Low/Reverse linkage, then pull the rod out. A lot of work for a small leak. Before I did all this work, I would try cleaning the area with Brake Cleaner and compressed air. Then put a blob of RTV silicone on it. There is no pressure there, so that may stop the leak. It's worth a shot before tearing the transmission all apart! HTH!! Good Luck!!

WOW, awesome car. I was only out of high school five years when that car hit the streets. I remember the 70 Cuda as one sweet ride.

The plug you describe might be where a tester is inserted to check internal pressures of the trans. If it has any kind of surface to get a wrench on you should be able to remove it and wrap with teflon tape to seal it.

These access plugs are sealed from the factory. You will probably have to remove the trans and disassemble it to pop it out. The other option is to drill a small hole in it and pull it out with a screw and a slide hammer. Then solder the screw hole up, and reseal the plug with high temp RTV sealer.
