Just wondered if anybody had some good advice.
I've seen loads but they all look pretty much the same (apart from colours obviously and the small details), but what about material or make? I'm on a budget of £250-£300 at a push, it seems that the 'quality' suits are at least double that! So any recommendations would be gratefuly accepted.
Thanks!

It depends on what you need the suit for. But no matter what, you can ignore the expensive name brands.
For cool weather, look at 100% wool, or wool blends. For warm weather, look at linen, or linen blends.
For cut, color, # buttons, etc.. it will depend on your body, coloring, and personal preference.
Short and skinny, try one or four button jackets and/or double breasted to add breadth, pin stripes to add height.
Short and husky, avoid the double breasted, checks, and patterns. Pin stripes or solids to slim and lengthen, single button jackets.
Tall and skinny, this is the easiest build to dress. You can wear most styles well, but pin stripes will often make you too tall and lanky. Try 2 or 3 button jackets. A non vented jacket will accentuate the slender build at the waist, and can add shoulder width, a very appealing look. You also have the body to wear the long fashion coats, and the 5+ button styles.
Tall and husky, look at darker solid colors to slim, and 2 button jackets. Try vented jackets for comfort and movement.
Regardless of body, the hems should fall at the right spot. With your arms at your side, they should fall to the wrist. With pants, it should come on the lower part of the ankle. You don't want to look like you are wearing high waters when you sit. Many stores will hem in house for a minimal fee, or even for free.
Stay away from the designer brands, you're paying mainly for the label, not the suit. I don't know of store names in the UK, but look in your yellow pages, or on line. Here we have a store called the Men's Warehouse. They have suits that start as low as 99 USD, or 52.37 GBP. That's a deal no matter what your budget!
Good Luck!

Get a decent quality faberic.
And make sure you get a good fit. If possible buy one from a store that sells the matching jacket and trousers separately, so you can select the exact size of each.
You may want to buy 2 pairs of trousers with it, since they wear out faster than the jacket.

You can get a reasonable one for £100-150.

M&S might still have a sale on them too, it'd probably be worth checking.

If you want a really good one, you probably can't afford it on that budget. A good way to distinguish a great suit from a normal suit is whether the cuff buttons unfasten or not. On your average suit, they're just sewn on for show.

Assuming you're going for a 'sewn on cuff buttons' suit, so long as you have a good faberic and a good fit, you won't get much for £250 that you don't get for £150.

You know, there's nothing wrong with getting your suit from a quality re-sale outlet. Look in the phone directory. A good quality suit will be within your budget. Make sure that you stay away from gimicky things like "flare" trousers, and wide lapels. Go for a classic look. Once you own it, suits can be given different looks by choosing different types of shirts. Dress it up with a ruffled tuxedo shirt. A good casual look is a silk knit T.

I buy my dads suits as he is the fussy and a busy person so he does not find time to try on. Out of all the suits I have got him for quality and durability and style he prefers Marks and Spencer. He has had suits made to measure and been to expenise Suit stores and high street shops but he likes M&S especially the onces that as suitable to travel and machine wash. Other nice designer suits he has found himself as on a Sunday in TK Maxx.
I am imagining you think M&S is rater down market. My dad is 46 and is partner in a law firm and says those M&S suits never fail to get a compliment. It is worth looking and trying. And M&S have good sales too.

Where we live, there are retail/wholesale houses that will sell a suit that you'd find in a department store for about 1/2 price. The last suit that I purchased I saw in a high end store for about $600US and I found the same suit for $200US.

With cloths, you pay a lot for the ambiance of the seller.

Don't get hung up on "quality " suits as you call them. Go out try one on and choose one that you like . You can't go wrong. I'm sure you'll find the right one within your budget.
