Alright, I've tried everything. I did virus and spyware scans. I have 2 gigs ddr ram, 3 gig pentium 4 processor, and a radeon x1600 512 mb [AGP]. Yet I still get poor framerates and lag on games like Oblivion and Battlefield two. What else can I do???

I have this same problem -- only thing i can figure out is there is something running in the background. I think it's from a weather-channel download i did -- i started having the problem after that. Even though i removed the weather program, it now does it.

Best result i've had is to turn on my computer - without the internet hooked up, and let it sit for 5 or 10 minutes THEN play my games. Pain in the butt? Yes, but that's what i've worked out!

I'm not as computer-savvy as some, but I have seen internet lag. What kind of connection do you have to the net? There are some games I can't or won't try because I'm on dial-up, but I understand broadband and DSL are both much faster and so can handle the load better.
