I've read that when doing physical exercises a lot of American guys wear jockstraps. Here in Europe on the continent this is unusual. If I'd wear it, people would probably laugh at me, or at least think I'd wear some sexual underwear.
Where does the use of the jockstrap come from? How come it is so normal in USA? What is the advantage of it above normal underwear?

A jockstrap, also known as a jock or athletic supporter, is a type of men's undergarment designed for use in sports or other activities, such as during the recovery from a vasectomy. They are also worn by some people as general, everyday underwear.

A typical jockstrap consists of a wide elastic waistband with a support pouch and two straps extending from the base of the pouch around the buttocks (which it does not cover, unlike briefs or boxers) to attach to the waistband. The pouch, in some varieties, may be fitted with a pocket to hold an impact resistant cup or box to protect the testicles from injury

Usually jock straps are used only for sports and are worn under whatever uniform they are wearing. Maybe you are referring to compression shorts? In which case guys wear these under their shorts for things like walking, jogging, weight lifting, playing soccer, etc.

Because American man have much larger packages then smaller european men, its a fact. They wear those cups so they guard against an injury. European mean dont get hurt when they get a shot to the balls, but big american packages feel big hurt... hence the need for a cup.

It helps keep their junk in check. Keeps dangly things from dangling and getting possibly injured in the course of play.

Other than that I have no idea why it is Europeans don't do it.

Same principal that the truck drivers use - it is easier to carry a heavy load if it is strapped down.
