Hi, I speak Afrikaans. I now live in Moscow - teaching English as a Foreign language. :-)

South Africa has eleven official languages, and Afrikaans is spoken by a small percentage of the citizens. Even though Afrikaans is associated with "apartheid" and people think that only white people speak Afrikaans, it is in fact a wrong assumption.

My anchestors are from Germany and came to South Africa about two hundred years ago and my whole family now speak Afrikaans.

How are you? "Hoe gaan dit?"
I am fine. "Dit gaan goed."
I love you. "Ek is lief vir jou."

The language sounds like German with hard R and G sounds, and is very very close to Dutch. In fact, Dutch people and Afrikaans people can probably understand each other if both parties speak slowly.

Hope that helps!

I can speak afrikaans but I am in the States and there is no one here to speak afrikaans to. It really sucks to know that a language you learn from childhood isn't useful to you in another country.

Ek ook kan Afrikaans praat! Im not 100 % good at it though. Most of us can speak Afrikaans except for Diesel! (Porgie...looks like Diesel might want to shoot me too....lol) Afrikaans is a popular language in SA but im sure there are more Zulu speaking people.

Geniet jou dag!

Ek kan nie Afrikaans praat nie maar ek probeer. You probably didn't get me if you are not a South African. I said "I can't speak Afrikaans but I try". I think I speak it better than Kim does...lol.
Looks like I need more bullets.

That's where my Afrikaans ends.

Afrikaans, is a good language... I would say that 95% of all South Africans can speak or understand afrikaans.. its actually a very easy language to learn. some fine examples. house : huis;
mouse : muis; people:mense; understand:verstaan; why: hoekom now if you wanna say "please will you pass me that pen" you would say... Sal jy asseblief vir my daai pen aangee..
anyways... wanna live the real thing... come say Howzit here in Sa.

lol. yes well South Africa's population is about 47million so let's halve that to 23.5 million and assume that atleast half of SA's population alone can speak afrikaans. Now that's not including all the ex-pats and overseas jollers... you know who you are!. That's alot of boerewors and bakkies.... :-)
