Because "human rights" advocates are self-absorbed dreamers who must throw a tantrum for anyone to listen to them. They decry injustices, but from a distance. They claim freedoms without accepting what it takes to procure those freedoms. They want action, but are unwilling to act. They want others to sacrifice and die for their cause. Only pay attention to those who have bled for their cause. All others are not worth your time.

Maybe because if we didn't have any rights we would not be America. Like the patriot act which is more appropriately named the anti-patriot act. You know the laws which now allow the police to enter your home and vehicles without a search warrant and to arrest people without reading them their rights. Police are fast becoming more abusive with no worry about anyone doing anything about it. I know first hand experience. I am not a criminal, I do not do drugs, I am not a thief, yet I was arrested and abused for supposedly abusing my husband, which I did not do and he told them that. I fought it with 3 attorneys and filed a complaint against the officers involved and they pressed 3 more charges against me. After 1 1/2 and 10,000 dollars later I finally just plead to be done with it. I found that no one will help you and they have all the evidence to tamper with and in my case you could see that the time jumped back and forth and it was tampered with obviously. No one will help you. We need more rights not less!

If you have to ask the question, and call it "ranting" I don't think you have any such friends.
You may have been lucky, or kept your head down in life, and never had a conflict with officialdom. You may never have been unjustly accused, or fired, or, having been victimized been blamed. Or felt the arrogance of power and the law's delay.
Human rights lawyers and campaigners tend to argue against their own interets. (Well, Americans, especially those right-wing and conservative Americans who are not rich, tend to vote against interest and over irrelevant issues like abortion, flag burning, school prayer and the Spanish-version of the Star Spangled Banner that (I assume) is legally sung in Puerto Rico (hey, the Treaty of Paris and the Organic Act give them that right).)
Always remember Martin Niemoeller: "Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up." See link.

There is so much chaos in the world, it's easy to find things to rant about. Appreciate that you have friends who have passion about people and the world. You don't have to agree with everything they say and do. Listen with an open heart.

Because there is SO much to rant about. I agree, it gets to be a downer, so they should choose their topics. They will be more selective (hopefully) as they age. Being upset about a lot of things is tiring! And, they will lose their audience -- too much ranting makes people turn a deaf ear, i think.

Because they are the type of people who always need to have a cause, a reason for their self-righteousness and feelings of moral superiority.
Rant, rant, rant! They are tedious and dull.

Ranting about something, anything, frees one from having to think more deeply about the complexities of the issues involved.
It makes you feel self-righteous without having to do anything about it. Hey ho, Maggie.

Sometimes I question peoples passion. In some cases I think people just want to talk and have nothing else to talk about. Truly passionate people are move active as opposed to more chatty.
