How can I tell if my husband is depressed or going through mid-life crisis?

He is 40 years old. He complains all the time about work and money. He never has anything good to say about anything and is almost all the time bitter and angry. He yells at the kids for little things that they do... for being kids in other words. He's always down on himself for missed opportunities. He doesn't take the time to take care of himself physically. Says why be optimistic when he's always let down anyway. Likes to spend time by himself almost excessively.

Has an anger problem.

I should add that he has never once been abusive with me. In fact, he treats me very well.

How old is he? Does he work all the time? Does he take care of himself (physically, mentally and spiritually)? Depression could be related to circumstances or situations such as death of a loved one, loss of a job, it's usually associated with depressive things that could have happened. Mid life crisis is different, instead of being depressed and feeling like there is no hope, most of the time, the men look at what they've accomplished and look where they're headed. If they don't like what they see, most of the time they try to change themselves or get involved with others, experimenting things they've never done. You would really need to be more specific about the individual to decide whether they're depressed or going through mid life crisis.

Probably both. A mid-life crisis is a form of depression.

However, if his method of dealing with it is anger and bitterness and he still gets his job done and brings home a paycheck, then that's probably a lot better than if he committed suicide or just picked up and left to hitchhike around the country.

It could be either. I would advise you to take him to a therapist. This is effecting your children and that is not healthy.
