Ecommerce has become an important distribution channel for both Web-only merchants and traditional merchants who are now using the Web. Even traditional merchants such as Blockbuster or Staples are finding that the Web can be a huge source of revenue for them. The Web is not a substitute, but simply another channel for retailing.

According to Internet Retailer's Top 500 Guide http://www.internetretailer.com/top500/ here are the Web sales of the top 10 etailers:

1 - Amazon = $8.490 B (100% of total sales)
2 - Office Depot = $3.800 B (Web is 26.6% of total sales)
3 - Staples = $3.800 B (Web is 23.6% of total sales)
4 - Dell Inc. = $3.778 B (Web is 6.8% of total sales)
5 - HP Home & Home Office = $2.829 B (3.3% of total sales)
6 - Office Max Inc = $2.567 B (28% of total sales)
7 - Sears Holdings Corp = $2.160 B (4.4% of total sales)

9 - SonyStyle.com = $1.624 B (2.4% of total sales)
10 - Newegg.com = $1.300 B (100% of total sales)

The goals of all these merchants is to increase their web sales because it can contribute to their bottomline.
