Pencils are made of graphite, a substance that can be mixed with a clay, I believe. The amounts of clay to graphite can create pencil "lead" that can make a very black line to a very light grey line. A number 2 pencil is the product thatt has 50% graphite and 50% clay. It corresponds to a "HB" drawing pencil.
