"Alien" 1. How the hell is a guy with a knife scary when you can just shoot him in the face? 2. In space no one can hear you scream... the first Alien movie was the scariest. The only other movies that are any scary are the Excorcist or What Lies Beneath. Usually ghost movies because there's no proof that ghosts exist or not. Or just watch a documentary on ghosts or the paranormal on the Discovery channel and then spend the night at an abandoned haunted hotel. Or watch a documentary on alien abductions or sightings and spend the night in a forest if you want to be scared. Anything else is just a joke and not scary.

Well you can't go wrong with the classics. My fav horror films are The Exorcist, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original Amittyville Horror, IT etc.
If you really want a good scare try reading a few horror books. Both the Exorcist and Amittyville are great books that truly did scare the crap out of me. Much better than the movies.

It depends on what you are looking for, the old classics or the late night drive in specials. If you want to see one that is a cult classic the original night of the dead. Plan 9 From Outer Space is Hilarious. Ed Wood seems to have tried to cover every genre as he was making it. It has aliens and Zombies and Vampires and... It is also famous as the worst film ever made, and there is a negative version of the Oscars called the Woodies in honour of it.

I know ALOT of other good ones, but you won't find them at a rental place. They're pretty much only available at underground stores or order online.

To me, the all time scariest movie is The Exorist. There is a new released version that came out a few years back with never seen footage. It took me three different times over the years to watch it. I still won't see it alone.

If you've got a big screen and neightbors that can tolerate surround sound and yelling, I say get "When A Stranger Calls." I saw it in the theater and it was great. Im not sure if it would be the same on a 20" though...
