Are Clearings only available to prospective students who've been denied places on the colleges they applied to, or can I register with UCAS now, to have a go?

You can register now.

Clearing is about matching any available spaces with any available students either because the student has changed their mind on chosen courses, hasn't yet found a course or been rejected from all choices or has changed conditions. The courses may be new courses, too late to initially be in the process or may not be as popular as first thoguht, or places may have become available due to students dropping out.

If you've got a particular course or establishment in mind you coul;d also contact direct. They may take you on but then tell you to apply through UCAS to confirm.

Good luck but don't go on a whim "to have a go". It will be costing you £3k in fees per year plus whatever you need for rent, etc. You could be talking £6-7k a year and although the student loan will cover this, you still have to pay it back if you drop out. Good courses and good outcomes still demand hard work, determination and focus.
