To "rip" music is the process of converting CD audio tracks into digital files, ususally in a MP3, WMA or WAV format. These new digital files then can be burned to another CD for audio uses, transferred to a portable player [such as an iPod or other MP3 player], listened to on your computer or burned to a backup medium [cd or dvd] for storage.

When you rip music, or movies for that matter, you essentially copy the music into your computer's hard drive as a data file (.mp3, .wav, .wma). Ripping a song or video from a CD or DVD is just the way a computer copies media from one source to another, while making it playable in it's new location.
