I'm buying a condo, and the airconditioner isn't cooling. I noticed that there was ice on the pipes going into the outside unit. The condo is only two years old. Could this be an expensive problem?

Low freon, clogged filter, clogged coils.
Get somebody out to do an estimate. They'll be able to diagnose the problem for a liitle dough, but it'd be worth it to find out what's wrong before you buy.
Good luck

Two possible causes for icing of the AC coils....the return air filter could be badly clogged. Replace it if necessary. The more likely problem is that the AC is low on Freon. Ask the seller the age of the AC unit. You may want to make a new unit part of the purchase agreement. Even if the seller adds the cost of a new AC unit into the price of the property, you can roll it into your mortgage payment, and avoid the up front cost of buying a new unit.

II would thing there is a blockage in the pipes. It will prevent the house from cooling and freeze up the pipes.

The fan that blows warm air across the pipes inside your furnace/AC may be broken.

I just had that problem with my air condition. I was told that it was either low in freon or my coils were dirty. My freon was good so all I needed to do was clean my coils and this fixed the problem.

Maybe you set it to low, or your filter is clogged.
Turn it on fan to thaw the pipes and check the filter.

We just had that happen yesterday. We cleaned the coils. That fixed the problem. It didn't cost us a thing.
