The lack of education, grammar, intellect and knowledge displayed by those who answer Yahoo! Questions is quite alarming. To think that these people are allowed to vote is even more so. It probably explains the Bush and Blair Administrations, but it also says a lot about democracy. If you allow everyone to vote it demeans its value. It also explains why, whereas you get a disproportinate amount of corruption and stupidity in the UK's House of Commons, the House of Lords (where the incumbents are either selected or inherit their place) has a much higher reputation.

You have an interesting point-of-view. The problem is the creation of a comprehensive intelligence test that could be applied fairly to all persons. More and more, we have discovered flaws in reading comprehension tests. Even the SAT's have been dropped by Ivy League schools. Some people are quite intelligent even though they haven't had much education. Others, although they are citizens, continue to work better with their primary language. I've seen tests that are difficult for poor kids, because the questions use examples which have not been experienced by this group. The difference between the reasoning of left and right brain persons is tremendous. They follow completely different routes. Every test I've seen favors left brain individuals. Take several IQ tests, I guarantee you that every time you take one, you'll come up with a different score.

I certainly agree with you in regards to the lack of basic skills which have been displayed on this website. There is even a spell check at the top of the page, and people are too lazy to use it.

Write us more often. It's swell to respond to an intelligent individual.

Winston Churchill once said that the best argument against democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter.

But then he also said that "democracy is a terrible form of government, but the alternatives are all far worse," which I think is essentially correct. As appealing as the idea can sometimes seem, putting restrictions on who can or can't vote is a slippery slope, and sets all sorts of precedents you really don't want to be setting. But I'm not entirely sure. I have to admit the idea has crossed my mind more than once as well.

The stupid people would rise up and overthrow the smart voters' decisions, though. (Welcome to America).

This is a problem that I see, as well. And I'm not sure what can be done about it. I'm very close to deciding to simply withdraw from the rat race entirely. I'd like to find a nice quiet corner of a caribbean island, and just sit out all the trouble the idiots are causing in the world. After they kill each other off, maybe we can create a more enlightened society.

Nope. In the US, the Federalist Papers describe how ignorance of the common man cancels out the ignorance of other common men. So, even an intelligent person will do the same.

You need to assure the Candidates are qualified. Then you will improve who runs the country, town, etc.

Wow you sound like an elitist and a borderline racist. Yes why don't we do what you say. Make sure you get a bigger gate around your house because your line of thinking will lead to Revolution and rioting.

Well I definitly know where you are coming from, but I would have to answer NO. It is a bit scary that dumb people get to vote, but think about it, who is going to write these IQ tests and what will the questions be?

What happends when the Bush Administration writes a test and you have to be a conservative in order to pass it. Goverment can't even manage the country decently right now, never mind write a fair test.

In the United States voting is a right not a priviledge. People amaze me when they post this type of crap. It is arrogant and elitist. What is comes down to is you don't like the way people vote, so you want to decide who can be allowed to vote. All I can say is unless you are capable of overthrowing a nation, and installing yourself as dictator. Get over it!
