I never say "Bless You". I say "Damn You"...sneezes annoy me.

My mother explained it to me this way:
Before antibiotics and better drugs if someone sneezed it could mean the start of a serious illness. People started to say God Bless You meaning that they were praying that you would not have anything serious that was a life threatening illness.

people used to believe that when you sneezed, your soul would fly out and the devil would try to get it, so bless you gets it in and i just wonder what happens when you sneeze in a room of mines?

people say "bless u", cos back in the day when someone sneezed others would think they had a deadly desease. that's how the phrase "god bless u " came to life.

years ago people believed that if you sneezed, your soul would leave your body. saying bless you would stop it happening. not sure why they believed your soul lived in your nose, though.
