Its hard to say,but they take a lot of food, just make sure your silverware stays out of it :) and you must keep the water running while it is on for the motors sake, if not you can burn it up.
also, ice cubes are good to put in disposal, it will help sharpen the blades.
if you want it to smell fresh, put a little baking soda and vinegar in it, or lemon rinds and orange rinds make it smell good.
The only thing I ever had problems with are egg shells I would not recommend putting those in the disposal.

Follow what everyone else said, only make sure that you keep it on for 30 seconds after you are done, so the stuff definitely gets down the pipes. also, keep the water on an additional 30 seconds after you have finished turning it off, I'm not sure why but that's what my maintenance man told me before. He said "it's in the manual you should have read it before you used the appliance." LOL Men are soo funny. But a cool way to use oranges and citrus when they start getting too soft to eat anymore is to put down the garbage disposal and leaves a nice fragrance in the air.

Generally you should have a look at the manual that comes with it to determine how much stuff / what stuff you can chomp with it. Different models have different capacities.
Keep in mind that you should run water at the same time to help the chomping process/
Also watch out for rings/knives/other kitchen type implements falling down the hole. They make a hideous sound when being disposed of!

I just use mine for little scraps left in the sink. I once put macaroni in it, running the water the whole time, and it clogged real bad. I had to take it apart. My lease has a long list of things not to put in it, but I can't remember where I put the list. I do remember that celery cannot go in it.

I was told by the installer of my most recent disposal to use it only for the small things that fall into the sink during food prep, or clean-up. Don't use it for vegetable peelings, rice, etc. That's not what it's mean for.
