Yes, but for good reason....you see, upset in traditional thinking & being is a sure sign that something is amiss...and we have, for umpteen years too long, been sadly mistaken about "relationship"...no matter what the ethnic or cultural background...
It has been deemed that a relationship with someone must be a "forever" situation...ergo, you are already in a "stuck" frame of mind from the start...not a good foundation, since this breeds ownership feelings, jealousy, fears.
Actually, a relationship is for the purpose of two people to gain growth, both personally & spiritually, through the sharing of time together...whether this be a friendship, or a more intimateship. When this growth no longer occurs, then it makes sense that the relationship is no longer productive to either partner, and so it is time to move on...hopefully before harsh feelings come to the forefront, which in turn makes what should have been a good experience into a not so nice one.
If we look at relationships with a freer attitude, you create a stonger basis for continuance, a realistic perspective of having a standard for maintenance, and both parties have no problem with keeping communications alive, since both already know that both are equally important...a big set back in the "stuck" scheme...See?

I think the society we live in is making it harder to form a lasting commitment because it is so easy to get out of. I don't believe that most women want a man for his money (although if he gets a woman pregnant and leaves he should be fiscally responsible for the child).
Also with the television blasting 24 hour unrealistic expectations of the opposite sex most people are less willing to settle for reality. Perfection is what is expected and it is supposed to be easy all the time. Perfect passion and love for ever. It doesn't help that the internet provides a constant source of bigger and better areas to meet someone better so people are constantly looking.

I think in general relationships are getting harder, firstly because I think we have so little free time that you don't really get to know the other person and secondly because even when you do get to know them we run very stressful lives an so things that wouldn't bother us under normal circumstances become unbearable - we tend to put up with very little and be very unaccepting.

No, I think that Americans are loosing their patience and ability to see through the crap to get to the goal. We are becoming short sided. This makes us get bogged down in crap that we should be able to overlook in a relationship. We also do not do a great job in honestly saying we are sorry. Being able to honestly admit that we were wrong is a great talent, it causes growth and love. But a country that just blasts people for being wrong, cannot expect people to know how to do it in relationships. So relationships are the same, but I think we demand less of our selves, so less comes from the relationships.
