With property in London, rooms are never as big as they sound! A double room is generally for a double bed (ie not even a queen sized bed) and you will often find that the double is about all that they will fit. Sometimes their idea of being able to fit a double room is to have it squashed into the corner so that you can only get in from one side.

In contrast, a single room is only big enough for a single bed and reality is that in such a room, you probably won't be able to turn around without bumping into the walls.

An 'oversized room' is an illusion because there is no such thing in London!

A double room will fit a double bed, single room a single bed. A box room is just big enough for a single bed and nothing else.

It means a room big enough to have a double bed in it, rather than a tiny box room with no space.

A twin has two single beds ( in Italy - Doppia)
A double has a bed big enough for two (in Italy - Matrimoniale - which is often two separate bases held together with a solid frame surrouding the two single bases - so they don't push apart by lying in the middle - but also they cannot easily be separated to make two single beds with a gap in between)

A room that has space for a double bed - or the bed itself if the flat is furnished. A uk double bed normally measures 4' 6" (145cm) wide.
