The best way is to call Alcoholics Anonymous and find out where the next meeting is. Then go to that meeting and identify yourself to someone. Tell them that you need help to quit. They will help you take care of the rest as long as you are willing to try. Go to as many meetings as you can when you first quit.

Once an alcohoplic starts drinking he finds it next to impossible to stop. So 1st and formost stop drinking. & then just don't touch alcohol. If you can stop on your own, great. If not get yourself detoxed for a few days or a week in some hospital, or ask your doctor to prescribe Topomax or Campral (google search on the net for them) for you.
It sounds simple, but it is extreamly difficult for an alcoholic to stay away from the 1st drink because his mind is sick or suffering from a neurological addiction syndrome. It has often been said that the main problem of the alcoholic centers in the mind rather than in the body. So the only cure is for him/her to have a profound psychic change or some spiritual experiance. (Unfortunately most psychiatrist do not know how to cure this disease. They don't even know what the disease is, as none of the medical colleges in India at least, teach them about alcoholism or addiction. Please be aware of this fact.)
The psychic or spiritual change can be best brought about by taking the 12 Steps as directed by the book Alcoholics Anonymous (aa.org) or by doing a 10 day Vipassana meditation course ( www.dhamma.org ) and attending the AA meetings regularly to help others get the spirituality that you have recieved.
If you are a hard drinker who only thinks that he is an alcoholic just because you can't stop drinking every day, then just attending the AA meetings regularly should be enough if you want to truely stop. But an alcoholic like me landed in a mental assylum after 2 years of daily meetings and listening to the advice given to me at those meetings. If you need any further assistance pl. don't hesitate to ask.

Alcoholism is a disease. There is no way to get rid of it. Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic.
If you have a problem with alcohol, you need help.
Contact your local crisis center or mental health professional such as a psychiatrist or psychologist. There is no shame in having a drinking problem. Millions of people have the same problem. It is a genetic disease that can be treated.
Treatment programs like Alcoholics Anonymous have worked for many people although I personally do not recommend them out of a distaste for religious interventionists.
Group treatment works and so does inpatient rehabilitation.
Ultimately, you must want to stop drinking,.

One can't get rid of it- per say. Its possible to get a day by day reprieve. The most successful method is obtaining a higher spiritual connection. Alcoholics Anonymous, as corny and cliche as it seems- has one of the best success rates. AA is a 12 step plan that incorporates the known methods of successful recovery.
Look up a meeting in your neighborhood or nearby- the meetings are Anonymous you don't sign up or have to talk to anybody about anything. Just go to a meeting and sit there and listen, go to another meeting at the same place and eventually you may hear one or two things that put you in the direction desired.
AA or any other method can work only if you want it to work. Drinking is a choice and it's only the abusive drinker that can stop the insanity. Remember, people don't become alcoholic in one day, and same for recovery... It takes time (day by day) and a sincere desire.
Look up the 12 steps of AA on-line and also "The Promises" of AA. Go to a meeting as soon as possible.
The philosophy of most 12 step plans are simple; One addict/alcoholic can best understand and relate to another and as such can be the most helpful in pursuit of recovery.
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, Courage to change the things I can and Wisdom to know the difference."
If this quote makes senseto you- you're on your way to success
Best Wishes

An Alcoholic is one for life. YOu don't ever get cured. Just as a person allergic to Onions is never cured of the allergy. It will be a daily challenge for you to choose sobriety rather than allowing your life to be ruled by the bottle.
You can do it. A lot of people worse off than y ou have already done it. Find a sponsor for AA or find a person to whom you can tallk, but do something. Expecting a "cure" is not the answer.

Hi there !
Find out the root cause for having started this habit ? What was that ? Only you know that ! right ?
Whenever you get the urge for drinking, divert your attention to something else like music, or temples/churches etc.
One thing is for sure..The feel and the urge to stop should start from within you..Dont expect somebody else to do it for you..its just impossible..!
Cut out the un necessary friendships, and club visits...where chances and temptations are high !
I am not sure about your age..number of children etc..Maybe thinking about them, their future, their studies etc...may induce some sort of positive energy into you ?
Once the initiative has got started in you, get the help of a psychologist / psychiatrist for maintaining that tempo...
You can do it man...DO IT ..Today and now...
All the best...

Alcoholism is not based on how long you drank. One can be an alcoholic from the very first time. The saying goes, "I don't get into trouble every time I drink, but every time I get into trouble, I've been drinking." If you can relate to that, then check here to find an AA meeting near you. Good luck.

go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Find them on the net or in the phone book. Give them a call. They keep your name anonymous. See what others are doing. Alcoholism can get worse, most times it lasts your lifetime and can ruin your life...so get there quickly.

A lot of people are recommending that you go to an AA meeting and I completely agree. But remember. AA will not make you stop drinking. You have to do that yourself. AA can help you stay off the booze by providing you with a support system but you have to take the first step. I wish you luck.
