I was told that smoking thins your blood which is not good for having anesthesia, but I'm not sure how much time is needed for your blood to return to normal.

The same amount of time as not eating. If you have been told not to eat from midnight-on, on the day of your surgery, then you should refrain from smoking during that time, too.
