In 1994 a survey was conducted to see just how many fishes are all over the world and they counted over 24,618 different types of fishes which included reef and we have yet to discover fishes that are capable of surviving (and thrive!!) in volcanic oceans. In other words there's no actual count on how many!

To the person who answered the question above me? ROCK ON! kudos for keeping so many fish :)

There are over 700 different kinds of just suckermouth catfish in South America alone. That doesn't even take into consideration all the other catfish in South America. So, the total fish types (species) in the world must be astronomical.

The simplest answer is TWO. Freshwater and saltwater.

Thats the easiest question to ask about fish, but the toughest question to answer. The ideal answer would be : There are as many fish in the world as the number of hairs on your head!
